Press Release March 2008: DJ
Styles...
|
Not all DJs are created equal. With
different goals and
functions, different clientele, and different musical and performance
styles, every DJ’s secret recipe for success is unique. Finding the
right equipment for your particular style is crucial. From enhancing
your performance to polishing your stage presence, quality DJ equipment
can take you from total zero to beatbox hero. Check out your DJ genre
to find out how to pull off a professional appearance and sophisticated
performance.
|
| Club DJs
Club DJs have one thing on their mind: Creating seamless transitions
between songs that keep the dancers bumping all night. If you’re lucky
enough to have a regular gig at a club, you’re probably already
familiar with the clientele’s music preferences and can make your
playlists in advance. A good club will have a lighting system and PA
system for you to use. If you’re not that lucky, or if you’re a club
owner starting your business, the right DJ equipment is a basic
necessity to keep the club-goers happy. What you’ll need:
• A good amp with a minimum of 350 watts.
• A high-channel mixer with a minimum of 12 channels and inputs for mp3
and CD players.
• A high-quality PA system with at least four microphones.
• A couple of 15 to18-inch full-range speakers. The amount and size of
speakers you need depends on the size of the room.
• A professional DJ workstation and stool (for when you need to take a
break).
• Durable cases for all of your equipment.
Again, your needs will depend on the existing equipment the club has
available. Everything else – the energy level, beatmixing, and music
selection – is up to you.
|
| Hip
Hop DJs
Born out of the hip hop movement in the 70s and encompassing the likes
of Grandmaster Flash and DJ Jazzy Jeff, hip hop DJs are some of the
most inventive, in-demand DJs. As a modern art form, “turntablism”
refers to the stylish hip-hop sensation created by scratching,
beatmixing, and beat juggling. Working mainly on turntables, a hip hop
DJ’s equipment must accommodate these sophisticated sound effects.
What you’ll need:
• Two industry-grade turntables and a vinyl music library.
• Some extra record needles.
• A two-channel mixer for mixing different audio elements.
• A set of headphones for beatmixing, especially if you’re going to be
in a club or loud environment.
That’s it! A hip hop DJ’s tools may be simple compared to the flashier
equipment of other types of DJs, but the finesse for mixing a cool
urban beat can’t be bought except through constant practice.
|
| Mobile DJs
From wedding receptions to school dances to corporate events, mobile
DJs have to be masters in flexibility. Often serving as the MC,
lighting director, sound engineer, and coordinator for each event, the
job of a mobile DJ is all-encompassing. Aside from having an extensive
library of pre-recorded, crowd-pleasing music, mobile DJs need to have
their own high-grade equipment that is compact and easy to transport
from site to site.
What you’ll need:
• A laptop with music files, CD player, or turntables with your own
music library.
• A professional-looking DJ workstation.
• A minimum two- or four-channel mixer; the smaller the mixer, the more
portable it is.
• Your own 100 watt amp and at least two 10-inch speakers may be ok for
weddings, but some school dances require a larger sound system than a
night club. Just imagine 1,000 kids in a high school gym! That’s a
bigger crowd than most night clubs ever see.
• A mic system with stands – a wireless system eliminates extraneous
electrical cords. • Your own lighting effects; try something small and
portable to beef up your performance, like a police beacon or the
ultra-versatile Stage Ape FABFOUR-F chasing lights package.
|
| Remember,
weight and
ease-of use should be your priority. Look for equipment that allows you
to get in and get out quickly without sacrificing quality.
