Press Release April 2008: DJ
Equipment Maintenance...
|
The Importance of DJ Equipment
Maintenance
DJ equipment is expensive to acquire and expensive to replace. Starting
a maintenance program for your DJ equipment to prolong the life of your
equipment, provide optimal sound quality, and save money over time by
avoiding costly replacements and repairs. Maintaining a crisp, clear
sound and ensuring the longevity of your equipment is all about
preventative care. You don’ need anything fancy – some cleaning cloths,
slip covers, water, compressed air, and rubbing alcohol can provide
total maintenance for your entire rig.
|
| Turntables
If you take away one thing from this article, make it this: dust is
your equipment’s biggest enemy. To keep dust off of your equipment you
must clean it regularly, especially if you work in smoky, dirty club
environments. Buy dust covers for each piece of your equipment, or make
them yourself using old T-shirts or pieces of fabric. Covers prevent
dust from accumulating on your equipment when it’s not in use, but it’s
impossible to keep everything completely dust-free. To get the dust off
your gear, invest in a can of compressed air. Use it to clean out all
of the little crevices in your equipment. This applies not only to your
turntables, but also to your mixer, amps, and speakers.
|
| On
your turntables,
the stylus is the only other feature that needs regular attention. Use
a short-bristle brush to gently dust the stylus. This will keep the
stylus head free of dirt and debris, providing the cleanest sound
possible.
And pay some attention to your slipmats. Slipmats are super easy to
clean – if your splimats aren’t too dirty, you can use a slightly damp
cloth to gently brush the mat. A vacuum cleaner attachment can also be
used to remove any dirt or dust from the slipmat. While you are
cleaning the slipmats, go ahead and clean the turntable plates in the
same manner – your turntable will thank you.
|
| Mixers
Aside from keeping your mixer dust-free, you also need to generously
lubricate the faders. A simple do-it-yourself project, you can
lubricate the faders with either generic oil for hair trimmers or a
lubricant specifically designed for electronics. All you need to do is:
• Remove the faceplate on the mixer in order to access the internal
workings of the fader. • Clean the fader thoroughly with a water and
alcohol solution on a cotton swab.
• Apply a couple of drops of lubricant onto the fader, swabbing
repeatedly to ensure full coverage. • Use the compressed air to clean
any dust that might be trapped in the fader’s inner workings.
|
| Cables
Kinks in your cables can result in static or hiss in your sound
quality. Keeping your cables in good repair will help ensure a crystal
clear sound. Respect your cables: coil them neatly after use and store
them in a protective container. Try not to unnecessarily yank, tug, or
kink your cables – they’ll last longer and sound better.
Maintaining your DJ equipment doesn’t take a lot of time or money, just
a little know-how and regularly scheduled cleanings. Be sure to include
your records and CDs in your regular maintenance activities. These
maintenance tips should increase the life and performance of your
electronic equipment, ensuring a high-quality sound instead of a noisy,
static-ridden mess.
