About Color Gel Sheets...

Add Excitement to Your Event

Even if you’re not a lighting expert.

If you’ve ever seen a play or concert, or been to a church or indoor speech, you probably didn’t think much about the stage lighting. And yet, stage lighting does so much to enhance every event – from allowing you to actually see what’s happening onstage to setting the mood and building excitement against a dazzling backdrop of moving colors. Imagine a dance floor without a strobe light or a disco ball, or a murder mystery play without a dramatic spotlight – it’s not an impressive thought. Obviously someone’s put a lot of thought into the lighting at each and every event that you see. From the colors you choose to the intensity of the spotlight, lighting can really make or break an event. Not a stage lighting professional? No worries. Even if you’re not an expert, you can add a dramatic touch to your own events by learning a few basic lighting techniques.

Gel Sheets: Adding Oomph to Your Production

Gel sheets are the most inexpensive lighting tools used by lighting professionals. For less than $5, you can choose from over 500 different colors of opaque gel sheets – and each sheet can be cut to fit four to six stage lights. When placed in front of extremely bright flood lights and parabolic aluminized reflector lights, or PAR cans, used in stage lighting, these gel sheets transform the stage from dull to vibrant with hues of blue, red, orange, yellow, green, pink … and everything in between. Gel sheets can be combined to create another hue (think back to your elementary school color wheel) or used in tandem to create splashes of different colors across the stage. Typically used in stage productions, concerts, clubs, and churches, gel sheets add that final punch to the entire performance. As an added bonus, these gel sheets can be cut and used over a regular light bulb at home, creating a unique and interesting ambience for parties and barbeques.

Lighting: Setting the Mood

When designing the lighting for your event, there are a couple of basic lighting techniques to keep in mind. First, you need to think about intensity – brightness versus darkness. For a more subdued and serious mood, use fewer PAR cans or less intense bulbs to create a subtle lighting effect. For brighter lighting that allows the audience to clearly see the stage action, use more PAR cans for a very intense effect.

Color: Pumping Up the Audience

Your next decision will be choosing between white light and colored light. This decision wholly rests on the kind of performance you are lighting and what you want to total effect to be. For instance, white light is probably best for lighting a city official’s speech. A high school dance, on the other hand, would need lots of colorful, rotating lights to match the energy of the crowd and the music. And, remember to have fun with your lighting. Experiment by changing colors to match the mood and stage action or to build excitement and anticipation in the audience. A simple way to do it is to use a four-channel controller with four PAR cans. Place a different gel sheet in each can – say, red, blue, yellow, and green – and voila, you have a basic lighting setup.

The Power of Color

There are many different psychological effects that are associated with lighting colors. Keep these points in mind when designing your lighting: • Blue is generally the most pleasant color to the human eye. This color is used often in churches for a soothing, calming effect. • You won’t see a whole lot of red when you go to a big concert or club. The reason? Alcohol enlarges the blood vessels in the eye, so people under the influence don’t see red very well. • Yellow, used often in traffic lights, can be seen from the greatest distance. No matter what color combinations you choose, keep changing and rotating the colors to add energy, drama, and excitement to your event. Using a wide spectrum of colored gel sheets is a cheap and easy way to make your performance pop.
